India's Trade Deficit Widened in April

05/14/2021 | 11:05am EDT

By Maria Martinez

India's trade deficit in April widened compared with the same month the previous year, government data showed Friday.

The trade deficit for April stood at $15.1 billion compared with a $6.76 billion deficit in April 2020.

Exports increased 195.7% from a year earlier to $30.63 billion, following a 60.3% increase in March. Imports rose 167.05% to $45.72 billion, following March's 53.7% rise.

India, Asia's third-largest economy, has been running a significant trade deficit for more than 15 years. The growth of exports in recent years has been offset by increased imports, mostly of energy and electronic goods.
