SYDNEY--Woodside Petroleum Ltd. has named Meg O'Neill as its acting chief executive, with CEO Peter Coleman set to retire from the energy company on June 3.

Ms. O'Neill, Woodside's executive vice president of development and marketing, will take up the role on April 20, the company said Tuesday.

Woodside had in December said that Mr. Coleman intended to retire in 2021 after roughly a decade in the top job.

The company said it is conducting an internal and external search for Woodside's next chief executive.
