Hydraulics, a promising energy already widely exploited
For several years now, the terms "sustainable development" or "green energy" have gained popularity. Many companies in the energy sector (in the broadest sense) are working to produce electricity or fuels in a sustainable way to preserve our natural resources.
Today, the protection of our formidable ecosystem is a major issue that must be taken seriously. "Greenwashing" is a term often used to denounce the actions of large polluting companies that seek to improve their image through green investments. In this list, we have gathered the main actors who exploit the water load to produce electricity.
The exploitation of the water load can be done in two different ways: through the potential energy (height difference) or through the natural kinetic energy (use of currents and tides). We often tend to forget this second possibility. In both cases, the water drives a turbine and produces electricity through an alternator. Hydraulic technologies, which often require heavy investments, are today responsible for the production of 16% of the world's electricity.
Marine electricity is in the process of being developed. It is indeed possible to harness the energy of waves, currents or tides and these ideas are becoming reality. The potential of tidal energy is estimated between 8,000 and 80,000 TWh/year. Today, far from being profitable, these innovative and promising decarbonized technologies contribute only 0.00004% of the world's electricity production.
