AT&T Inc.'s WarnerMedia unit, which makes and distributes content through channels including HBO, Cartoon Network and CNN, said it has named Richard Tom as its chief technology officer, effective Monday.

He succeeds Jeremy Legg, who will join AT&T Communications as executive vice president and technology chief, the company said.

Mr. Tom served as the CTO and senior vice president of the streaming service Hulu and the CTO of digital entertainment at Verizon Communications Inc.

He will oversee the company's data strategy, content-delivery systems, master control operations, broadcast engineering and the technology platform for the HBO Max streaming service, WarnerMedia said. Mr. Tom will also work with the technology teams of Xandr, WarnerMedia's advertising and analytics division.

Before joining WarnerMedia, Mr. Tom was an adviser and consultant for technology-focused and business-to-business companies as well as venture-backed startups. He cofounded Vessel, a short-form video service, with Jason Kilar, now WarnerMedia's chief executive.
