Siemens AG said Wednesday that a consortium led by its gas-and-power unit won a contract for two converter stations that will connect the island of Crete with mainland Greece.

The German engineering group said Siemens Gas and Power GmbH & Co. KG will cooperate to design, supply and install a 1,000 megawatts converter system.

"The interconnector will facilitate the transmission of energy from renewable resources generated on the Greek mainland to the island," Siemens said, adding it will reduce carbon emissions by 500,000 tons during the first full year of operations.

Commissioning is scheduled for mid-2023 and the order volume for the consortium amounts to 370 million euros ($418.38 million).

The costumer is Ariadne Interconnection SPSA, a entity fully owned by the Greek independent power transmission operator IPTO.
