Western Digital's Smart Video Drive (WD Purple)- Interview with Ghassan Azzi, Sales Director, Africa, Western Digital

Being that Western Digital Corporation(WDC) has an extensive range of hard drives, what drove WDC to produce a hard drive specifically for smart video systems?

As technology evolves, storage has become a necessity for all users and this includes AI-enabled security cameras and smart video market. There are a lot trends happening in the smart video market as it involves not only security but also analysis of the lifestyle. Consumer idea of smart videos has moved away from just camera and towards the idea of cameras with reliable storage built into it. From Big Data, to Fast Data, to data-centric applications such as Smart Video -the volume, speed, variety and value of data continues to exponentially grow and transform. Resolutions of videos are improving, people now need high definition videos. As resolution improves you need high amount of reliable storage, which is another trend for us. This gave rise to Western Digital's smart video line of product - WD Purple that has up to 14TB of storage. Leveraging our proven capabilities in consumer and industrial memory card innovation, the Western Digital Purple drive is the ideal solution for mainstream smart video data at the edge.

What is the difference between a desktop HDD and a Smart Video hard drive and in your opinion which is better for a smart video camera?

The difference lies in the engineering of the drive, so while choosing any; you, first of all, need to understand your usage. Smart Video HDD is designed for CCTV setup and the main difference lies in workload rating and reliability. It is advised to go for a desktop drive if you are setting up a PC, however, while setting up a CCTV it is better to choose video-optimized Smart Video drives. Normal PC HDDs do not come with the ability to withstand always-on operational demands and does not include the application-specific features necessary to handle smart video environments. On the other hand, Smart Video HDDs are built to record data 24×7 from multiple camera streams or channels. Smart Video HDD support video streaming firmware designed and built for write performance. These come with enhanced write functionality that ensures first-rate performance and better drive durability for DVR, media centre or video security applications.

While a Smart Video hard drive forms a central component to the digital storage of smart video video. It can be used in a DVR, NVR, Video Server or a Video Management System in order to work 24 hours a day and 7 days week. These hard drives need to be always active, to keep video evidence live.

What makes the WD Purple different from other smart video hard drives, any unique features of the WD Purple and what capacities does it come in?

WD Purple is specifically built for 24/7, high-definition security systems. With WD Purple storage, you have a drive engineered for high temperature, always-on smart video systems so you can rely on quality video playback when you need it most.

What differentiates WD Purple from other smart video hard drives is its unique feature - exclusive AllFrame technology. This improves ATA streaming to help reduce frame loss, improve overall video playback, and increase the number of hard drive bays supported within a NVR - a unique feature suitable for high definition cameras. The WD purple features an All Frame technology that enables recordings on 64 cameras, and an additional 32 streams for Deep Learning analytics within the system. With so many options, you have the flexibility to upgrade or expand the system. With an MTBF of up to 1.5million hours, the WD Purple delivers reliable operation in large scale smart video systems in harsh environments. Another unique feature is the exclusive IntelliSeek technology, which enables the calculation of optimum seek speed, ambient noise and vibrations and whether you are protecting loved ones or monitoring your business, WD Purple offers performance you can trust.

When installing a smart video system, a challenge faced is frame loss and pixilation. Does the WD Purple address these challenges?

Frame loss in a smart video system is caused as a result of video processing overload and dropped video frame testing. Features such as facial recognition, data analytics, and smart city solutions, all require large amounts of data such as this are what gives the better performing SSD a leg up on the legacy hard disk drive (HDD). The WD Purple drive is optimized to funnel the resources needed to handle incoming video streams while attempting to share resources evenly across all tasks - the drives are programmed to drop incoming video data when the system is overloaded. The WD purple drives improve upon current ATA streaming to help reduce frame loss and improve upon video capturing to reduce errors in pixilation as well as video interruptions that could happen in a video recorder system.

Can the WD Purple be used as a storage device for other files like documents, photos and music?

The major purpose for the WD Purple is to create a data storage system for smart videos and although they are optimized for video recording and security systems, the WD Purple drives are capable of storing other forms of media. The WD Purple drives are superior to standard desktop HDDs, so it is important to use the drives for its intended purpose.

What is the workload rating of the WD Purple and how many cameras can it support?

The WD Purple is specifically engineered to support up to 360 Terabytes of data per year, across NVR and DVR smart video systems. The storage is capable of supporting up to 64 cameras per Hard Disk Drive.

One issue with smart video drives is that they consume a lot of power and generate a high temperature of heat. Does the WD Purple address this challenge?

Usually, when you are looking for high-performance, low-latency drives - you should make less consideration for speed and focus more on performance. Just because drives run continuously day and night - it is important to have technology like the WD Intelliseek technology - our exclusive technology specifically designed for low power a high efficiency. With Intelliseek, we are able to calculate optimum seek speeds while keeping power consumption low.

Why is it important for organizations to secure their smart video data?

The storage of smart video data is as important to the efficiency of a security system as having a smart video equipment. Data help provide insight into business operations, improves security and convenience when searching for data while providing backlog of information for future use.

Is this product currently selling in Nigeria and where can it be purchased?

Yes, it is selling. Customers can find it in the IT Channel / Computer Village / Camera Security Channel.

As an industry leader in storage products, is WD looking to extend its range of smart video products?

As a world leader in storage solutions, we are always working and seeking to enhance our product portfolio. And while the smart video trends around the world are developing, we aim to be very much aligned with them and offer our customers only the best in storage solutions that fit their different needs.
