Shares of power producers rose sharply as investors rotated into defensive areas because of concerns about the ongoing spike in Covid-19 cases in the most populous American states.

American Electric Power said it intends to move forward with a $2 billion investment in renewable energy projects to serve customers in Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
