SAO PAULO--Retail sales in Brazil fell in May from April as a 10-day truckers strike at the end of the month prevented deliveries of goods to shops.

Sales fell 0.6% versus April and rose 2.7% compared with May of 2017. In April, retail sales increased a revised 0.7% from the previous month.

Truckers blocked highways around the country to protest a jump in the price of diesel fuel, and eventually forced the government to cut the cost of diesel and make other concessions. The blockades and the idle trucks prevented shops, gas stations and other vendors from getting supplies, resulting in the fall in sales in the month.

Sales of fuel and lubricants declined 6.1% in the month, while sales of clothing and shoes fell 3.2% and sales of furniture and appliances declined 2.7%.
