EYEMED EXPANDS CHARITABLE OUTREACH AS SPONSOR OF ONESIGHT'S 2014 VISION VAN PROGRAM

United in purpose and fueled by passion, EyeMed and OneSight will provide free vision care and eyewear to students in underserved communities through state-of-the-art mobile Vision Van Clinics

The Centers for Disease Control recently reported that vision disability is the single most prevalent disabling condition among children in the U.S. The American Optometric Association indicates that 80 percent of what children learn is visually processed yet one in four students in the U.S. has an undiagnosed vision problem. EyeMed, the nation's fastest growing vision benefits company, is committed to help children achieve their full potential by ensuring they have access to quality vision care so this health crisis can be stamped out.

To help close the gap in vision care for thousands more students in 2014, EyeMed Vision Care, announced today the expansion of its charitable programming as Presenting Sponsor of OneSight's 2014 Vision Van Program. The partnership builds on EyeMed's longtime support of OneSight, a public nonprofit providing access to quality vision care and eyewear to more than 8.5 million people in underserved communities worldwide since 1988.

OneSight's Vision Van program is an innovative solution to the vision care crisis we're facing even in light of healthcare reform. "Of 309 million Americans living in the U.S., only 130 million have vision care benefits," explains Lukas Ruecker, President of EyeMed Vision Care. "That means that almost 60% of Americans, including children, do not have access to vision benefits. The Vision Van program helps fill the gap for pediatric vision care that employer and government-sponsored benefits, as well as individual plans, do not."

Covered vision benefits are only part of the solution to ensuring American children can see and learn. In fact, the Vision Van program plays an even more critical role with healthcare reform. Even though the new pediatric benefit is designed to provide access to pediatric eye care for children 19 and under, the ability to access the benefits may be limited due to the number of providers in an area or the ability for families to get to an appointment.

Enter EyeMed's sponsorship of OneSight's Vision Van program. United in purpose, EyeMed and OneSight both exist to provide access to quality vision care and eyewear so people can see life to the fullest. EyeMed provides access through vision insurance coverage and OneSight provides access through charitable and sustainable programs in underserved communities.

"We believe all people deserve access to quality vision care to see life to the fullest. That's why our work with OneSight is so important to who we are and what we stand for," said Ruecker. "EyeMed supported the creation of OneSight's EyeLeen Vision Van in 2011 and together we've already traveled 40,000 miles to serve 7,600 students in 21 States. We're eager to expand our support and hit the road in 2014 to help thousands more students in need."

In addition to its global and domestic vision clinics and sustainable initiatives, OneSight launched its Vision Van program 17 years ago to expand access to quality vision care in remote locations throughout the U.S. Powered by EyeMed, the 2014 Vision Van program will provide free vision care and eyewear to thousands of students across 15 states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Utah and Wisconsin.

During Vision Van Clinics, students receive a comprehensive eye exam onboard EyeLeen, OneSight's state-of-the-art mobile vision center equipped with two exam lanes staffed by doctors, opticians and lab technicians volunteering from LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Sears Optical, Target Optical or other local providers. Local EyeMed associates, clients and partners also volunteer to support clinic operations. The majority of prescriptions are able to be manufactured onboard EyeLeen, ensuring students immediately receive the quality glasses they need and deserve to see and learn their best.
