Alumnus' power industry legacy recognised in Queen's Birthday honours

A distinguished CQUniversity Alumnus, the late Terry Effeney was recognised posthumously as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the recent Queen's Birthday honours.

His award was 'for distinguished service to the energy supply sector, particularly in Queensland, through planning and delivery programs, to infrastructure management, and to the community'.

The Master of Engineering graduate (1994) also earned an Honorary Doctor of Power Engineering award from CQUniversity in 2011 in recognition of his major contribution to the development and efficient operation of Queensland's power network over a 39-year period.

Terry's career began when he commenced an electrical engineering cadetship with the Capricornia Electricity Board (CEB) in 1979, at the age of 17.

He became the CEO of Energex in 2007 and, by 2016, became Interim CEO of Energy Queensland.

In this latter role, Terry led the multi-billion-dollar merger of government-owned corporations Ergon Energy and Energex until the permanent CEO was appointed.

As a combined entity, Energy Queensland had approximately 7500 employees and serviced customers from Tweed Heads to the Torres Strait islands.

The year 2016 was a busy one as Terry was also appointed as a member of the expert panel (known as the Finkel Review) to review the future security and reliability of the national electricity market in light of rapid technological changes. He was one of five industry leaders tasked to develop a national reform blueprint.

Prior to joining Energex, Terry held the role of Chief Operating Officer of Ergon Energy and was an Executive Manager with Ergon Energy and its predecessor organisations for more than 10 years.

Throughout his life, Terry was hailed as an innovator and leader, pushing industry reforms in the areas of safety, employee relations, sustainability and the adoption of new technologies and business systems.

He had a strong commitment to lifelong learning. In addition to his Master degree, he completed studies at the Australian Graduate School of Management, and the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has also completed an Executive Development Program through the Michigan Business School in the United States of America.

As a strong supporter of the professional development of engineers through CQUniversity's co-operative and vacation programs, Terry fostered collaborative relationships with several other universities.

Terry passed away on 30 March this year after suffering from leukaemia. He is survived by his wife (Joanne) and three children (Jessica, Grea and Lauren).
