China's Exports Down 1.3% in June; Imports Down 7.3%

BEIJING--China's exports fell last month as external demand softened, adding to the headwinds facing the Chinese economy, official data showed Friday.

China's exports fell 1.3% in June from a year earlier, after rising 1.1% the previous month, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal forecast a 2.0% drop.

Imports fell 7.3% in June versus the 8.5% drop in May, the customs data showed. The economists polled had forecast a decline of 3.8%.

China's overall trade surplus widened sharply to $50.98 billion in June from $41.65 billion in May. Economists had expected a $42 billion surplus.

In yuan terms, Chinese exports rose 6.1% in June from a year ago versus the 7.7% increase the previous month, while imports edged down 0.4%, compared with May's 2.5% drop.
