(BINGHAMTON, N.Y.) - Mayor Richard C. David on Thursday unveiled the City's first two zero-emission electric vehicles, purchased through a state Clean Energy Communities grant.

'Binghamton is proud to be a regional leader in clean energy and sustainable initiatives,' said Mayor Richard C. David. 'These new electric vehicles will reduce the City's emissions and help promote green alternatives, while also saving taxpayer dollars that would have gone toward replacing two aging City cars.'

The two 2019 Nissan LEAF electric vehicles will be used by the Planning Department, replacing a pair of vehicles near the end of their useful lives.

The total cost for both vehicles was $53,056, as part of special pricing through the Climate Mayors Electric Vehicle Purchasing Collaborative.

The City will use $50,000 in grant funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to cover the majority of the cost. A rebate from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will cover the remaining $3,056.

'Electric vehicles are a key component of the low-carbon transportation revolution,' said James Ritchotte, Director of Climate Mayors. 'Through the Climate Mayors Electric Vehicle Purchasing Collaborative - a partnership with the Electrification Coalition and Sourcewell - cities like Binghamton are gaining the access and ability to lead that transition by deploying EVs for their municipal fleets. We're proud to join Mayor David and the City of Binghamton in this important work to develop a sustainable, low-carbon transportation system that can usher us into the 21st century.'

In 2017, Binghamton became the first city in the Southern Tier to be designated a by NYSERDA Clean Energy Community. As part of its designation, the City received a $250,000 grant from NYSERDA. Mayor David announced earlier this month that $200,000 of the grant would fund a new 50/50 Clean Energy Community matching fund to support residential and commercial projects in Binghamton. The remaining $50,000 was used for purchase of the electric vehicles.

In August 2017, the City installed two public EV charging stations at Recreation Park.

Mayor David announced the City's plan to add two electric vehicles to its fleet in February during his 2019 State of the City Address. The announcement is part of a series of green initiatives the City is pursuing this year and part of a broader push under Mayor David to make Binghamton more sustainable.
