Fulton County GA : BOC Recognizes Environmental Award Winners

On Wednesday, October 18, 2017, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners (BOC) recognized eight environmental award recipients.

Each of the honorees were recognized because of their efforts to advocate and exemplify environmentally-sound practices in Fulton County. Their efforts aligns with the County's Strategic Priority Areas set forth by the BOC under the 2016-2019 Strategic Plan areas of All People are Healthy, All People have Economic Opportunities, and All People are Safe; and supports Fulton County's goal to be first in Impact, Service, and Efficiency by engaging people.

The 2017 Environmental Award Recipients by Commission District are:

DISTRICT 1: Commissioner Liz Hausmann

Unity Garden Program - Environmental Program

The quarter acre Unity Garden, an urban farm laboratory and educational facility at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, has contributed over 31 TONS of freshly grown produce for North Fulton's Food Pantry.

Livable Buckhead for Path 400 - Best Development

PATH400 is a 5.2-mile walkable, bikeable greenway running through the heart of Buckhead. The project is converting unused right-of-way along GA400 into a multi-use trail, providing tens of thousands of Buckhead residents and commuters with a safe, attractive venue for outdoor exercise, and creating connections that encourage pedestrian and bicycle travel.

DISTRICT 2: Vice Chairman Bob Ellis

Birmingham Falls Elementary School Environmental Education Program - Environmental Program

With the support of their principal, teachers and parent volunteers, students at Birmingham Falls Elementary School have planted a vegetable garden/butterfly garden; created an environmental club called the Green Team, with Green Team t-shirts; participated in the morning announcements with Green announcements; and collected recycling for the entire school.

Sandy Springs Environmental Project - Environmental Advocate

The Sandy Springs Environmental Project acts as an advocate for public policy and science, while supporting the City of Sandy Springs in better understanding the environmental dynamics at play in its tree canopy and watersheds.

DISTRICT 3: Commissioner Lee Morris

Blue Heron Nature Preserve - Best Development

In 2000, teacher Nancy Jones convinced a developer to turn over 7 acres in Buckhead to establish the Blue Heron Nature Preserve. The Preserve has expanded now to 30 acres of 4 distinct habitats: pond. wetlands, forest and meadow. It has 4 current walking trails in the heart of Buckhead, with additional trails being developed.

St. Anne's Episcopal Church Green Team - Best Development

With the help of an Energy Efficiency Audit by Georgia Interfaith Power & Light (GIPL), and financial assistance from GIPL efficiency grants, St. Anne's has installed solar panels and LED lights on the church property; improved insulation; upgraded their HVAC for better efficiency; started a recycling program; and created a wildlife sanctuary.

DISTRICT 5: Commissioner Marvin Arrington, Jr.

Pamela Harvey - Environmental Advocate

Ms. Pamela Harvey is a private citizen who has shown tremendous initiative to improve the community where she lives. Over a period of seven years, Ms. Harvey worked to have an illegal dumping spot on Campbell Rd cleaned up. She has also led cleanup efforts in several communities and created a Facebook Page to raise awareness of illegal dumping in South Fulton.

DISTRICT 6: Commissioner Emma Darnell

Juanita Wallace for - Environmental Advocate

Mrs. Juanita Wallace is a senior citizen who works to protect the environment in the English Avenue and Vine City communities where she was born and raised. She dedicated countless hours to the Lindsay Street Park project, the first park for the English Avenue community and the first green infrastructure demonstration project from Park Pride's Proctor North Avenue Green Infrastructure Vision Plan, led by The Conservation Fund.

FCCCE is a citizen environmental advisory group appointed by the Board of Commissioners to investigate environmental concerns; to make recommendations to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners on environmental policies; and to increase public awareness, understanding and involvement concerning environmental issues.
