German consumer prices fell in January in line with forecasts, due mainly to seasonal price decreases for package holidays, German statistics agency Destatis said Thursday.

The consumer price index decreased 0.6% compared with December and increased 1.7% compared with the same month a year earlier, Destatis said. Both figures were in line with the forecasts of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal.

The European Union-harmonized inflation index contracted 0.8% compared with December and rose 1.6% compared with the previous year. These figures were also in line with the forecasts of The Wall Street Journal.
