NEW DELHI--India's consumer inflation accelerated to the highest in five months in June driven by costlier fuel, government data showed Thursday.

The benchmark consumer-price index rose 5% from a year earlier, accelerating from May's 4.87% increase.

Fuel prices climbed 7.1% from a year earlier, quicker than May's 5.8% rise.

June's data marks the eighth-successive month that inflation has stayed above the Reserve Bank of India's 4% target, raising prospects of more rate increases by the central bank following its first hike in more than four years last month.
