Shares of industrial and transportation companies fell amid doubts about the prospects of a U.S.-China trade deal in the near term.

The companies considered most sensitive to trade negotiations, including mining-and-construction equipment maker Caterpillar, and agricultural machinery maker Deere & Co., were in the red after reports that negotiators were balking at some of the proposed terms in the "phase one" deal.
