The South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council (SDSRPC) and the South Dakota Soybean Association (SDSA) welcome Michael D. 'Mit' Goblirsch as the new executive director of the two organizations.

'I look forward to helping South Dakota soybean growers increase access to global markets and work with our directors to strategically lead and serve soybean producers throughout the state,' said Goblirsch.

With extensive career experience in national and international commodity marketing and trading, directors of both organizations said Goblirsch will provide exceptional leadership for South Dakota's soybean farmers.

'Mit is a proven leader who has a strong grasp of the soybean industry,' says Jerry Schmitz, a Vermillion farmer and SDSA President. 'He has broad international and U.S. experience with multi-national processors. He understands international markets at every level - as a commodity broker, global importer and as a commodity trading analyst for the U.S. Soybean Export Council. Mit's experience will be a tremendous asset in developing, assessing and promoting soybean policy'

Goblirsch will provide leadership for both SDSRPC and SDSA. The two distinct South Dakota soybean groups are designed to support South Dakota soybean growers.

SDSRPC is South Dakota's soybean checkoff organization and focuses on increasing opportunities for South Dakota soybean farmers by wisely investing checkoff dollars into marketing, research, education and promotional initiatives.

Because checkoff funds cannot be used for legislative activities, SDSA is the member-organization that represents soybean farmers on legislative policy issues.

Although SDSRPC and SDSA are funded and governed separately, the organizations do share administrative resources and are united in the overarching goal of helping South Dakota soybean growers thrive.

Matt Bainbridge, a farmer from Ethan and SDSRPC Chairman, says Goblirsch's experience will serve as a catalyst to drive the organizations forward and advance the checkoff's strategic goals.

'South Dakota's soybean farmers export so much of our product - nearly 70 percent of South Dakota's harvested 255 million bushels. As a soybean farmer, Mit's understanding and experience in international marketing will benefit our state's soybean producers,' said Bainbridge.

More about Michael D. 'Mit' Goblirsch

When it comes to experience, apart from Mit's years of service in the U.S. Army, the West Point graduate has spent more than 30 years working in raw commodities - distribution, exporting, trading, marketing and logistics.

Mit got his start working for Cargill and ConAgra, first in plant management state-side, then moving into international sales, trading and global marketing of commodities living and working in Panama and throughout Central America.

'I've enjoyed working in commodities because they are the baseline which drives the geo-political and geo-economics events of the globe,' Goblirsch says.

In the mid-2000s he became acquainted with South Dakota, working to establish ethanol plants throughout the region for U.S. Bio Energy Corporation. In 2008, he was called to promote international exports of soybeans for the U.S. Soybean Export Council, living and working in several Middle East nations and South Asia.

Most recently, Goblirsch worked as a commodity futures and options broker-trader for the integrated agri-business sector financial management organization, Commstock Investments. He and his wife, Jennifer, have a grown daughter, Helen.
