Air Liquide and Holcim have signed an agreement aimed at decarbonizing cement production through a carbon capture project at the Obourg site in Belgium.
This marks a new step in the collaboration between the two companies. Air Liquide will provide the oxygen required for the clinker production line (the key component of cement), compatible with oxy-combustion, as well as its innovative and proprietary Cryocap OXY technology. This technology enables highly efficient CO² capture. The captured CO² will then be transported via pipelines to an export hub, such as Antwerp@C, for permanent offshore storage in the North Sea.
The final investment decision remains subject to the establishment of additional partnerships throughout the value chain, as well as support from the public sector, particularly regarding infrastructure regulation and the implementation of financial risk mitigation mechanisms.
