(Alliance News) - Stellantis' electric strategy is facing further slowdowns due to production issues at Automotive Cells Company, the joint venture with Mercedes-Benz and TotalEnergies responsible for supplying batteries, as reported Friday by MF-Milano Finanza.
According to Bloomberg, the long-range fully electric Peugeot 3008 and 5008 models are experiencing delays of up to eight months. The difficulties are not limited to the French brand: as reported by Auto Infos, both Opel and Citroën have postponed the launch of their respective long-range electric models due to Acc's inability to ensure adequate volumes.
The Douvrin/Billy-Berclau plant in northern France is currently able to equip about 1,000 vehicles per month, a level well below initial forecasts. To speed up industrial ramp-up, Acc is relying on experts from Chinese supplier Eve Energy, whose number is expected to rise to 120 in the coming weeks. The goal is to triple production by summer 2026, surpassing 3,000 vehicles per month.
Acc produces Nmc batteries, while the European market is rapidly shifting toward Lfp batteries, which are more affordable.
On this technology, Stellantis is collaborating with CATL, which will build a gigafactory in Zaragoza, Spain.
Meanwhile, the Termoli dossier remains open: according to Milano Finanza, the project to convert the Molise site into an Acc gigafactory has effectively been shelved, although not formally canceled. The Termoli plant will instead continue producing e-Dct transmissions and Gse engines beyond 2030, ensuring operational continuity.
