Defense training-technology supplier CAE is teaming with TKMS AG to support the German company's bid to land a multibillion-dollar Canadian government order for naval submarines able to patrol the arctic.
CAE said its partnership with TKMS will bring together Thyssenkrupp's marine systems unit's expertise in submarine design and construction with its own strength in simulation-based training and mission systems support. The Canadian company would deliver long-term training solutions that would closely replicate real-world submarine operations to prepare Royal Canadian Navy crews.
The agreement adds to a number of deals agreed by Canadian companies seeking to position themselves for a slice of a submarine project. Ottawa last year selected Thyssenkrupp and Hanwha Ocean, which has teamed with fellow Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, as qualified suppliers for up to 12 patrol submarines.
The government is seeking submarines capable of patrolling the country's massive coastline that stretches along three oceans, equipped with advanced underwater surveillance capabilities. The Royal Canadian Navy's current submarine fleet is set to remain operational until the mid-to-late 2030s. Those Victoria-class subs were purchased from the Royal Navy in 1998, and began entering service in 2000.
CAE said that as part of the joint effort with TKMS it has also been identified as a strategic partner in support of the German company's engagements more broadly related to international and export subsurface and surface naval programs that include training and simulation components.
TKMS has signed pacts with several other Canadian companies for the patrol project, including shipbuilding and repair company Seaspan and with Magellan Aerospace on the possible development of heavyweight torpedos.
Hanwha Ocean similarly has struck support deals, including one with Canadian steel company Algoma Steel as part of a binding memorandum of understanding with the Korean company potentially worth $250 million in all.
