Communications-services rose amid strong earnings.

Verizon Communications jumped by more than 10% after the carrier said it gained a net 616,000 postpaid subscribers in the fourth quarter, prompting its chief executive Dan Schulman to call the period a "critical inflection point."

Shares of Charter Communications rose sharply after it reported gains in mobile and video subscribers, helping to offset intensified competition in its internet business.
