(Alliance News) - The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced on Tuesday that it has awarded the contract for the extension of the Red Line to the consortium led by Webuild Spa, together with India's L&T, Saudi Arabia's NESMA, and France's Alstom.

The project involves an 8.4 km driverless metro line, including 1.3 km on viaduct and 7.1 km in tunnel, as well as five stations – three of which will be underground – and signaling systems. A TBM will be used for tunnel excavation.

The extension is part of the development of the world's longest driverless metro network, recognized by the Guinness World Records, which comprises six lines totaling 176 km and was inaugurated last December.

The new section will enhance system integration and connect the Red Line to Diriyah, a UNESCO site and the focus of a major cultural and tourism development project.

Webuild has been present in Saudi Arabia since 1966 and has completed over 90 projects in the country. In Riyadh, it is currently engaged in several works, including the 10,500-space underground parking facility for Diriyah.

Webuild shares are down 0.3% at EUR3.52 per share.
