Consumer companies fell amid concerns about sentiment.
In November, 26.4% of consumers said they expect their financial situation to be "somewhat better off" or "much better off" in a year, down from 27.5% a month earlier, according to a survey from the New York Federal Reserve.
"The majority of Americans sadly don't have assets so they're the ones really hurting at these higher prices," said J.D. Joyce, president of Houston financial advisory Joyce Wealth Management. "They've received none of the positives of inflation, only the negatives."
Magnum Ice Cream clinched a market capitalization of about $9.08 billion on its public trading debut, as investors bet the Unilever spinoff would fare well with its Magnum, Cornetto and Ben & Jerry's confectionery brands.
