• Costain's head of process engineering joins new Fellows admitted to the Royal Academy of Engineering

Costain, the infrastructure solutions company, is celebrating the news of Dr Ollie Folayan, its head of process engineering and co-founder of the Association of Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers, being elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering's Fellowship.

Ollie joins other leading figures in the field of engineering and technology who have been named Fellows following the Royal Academy of Engineering's AGM. They are drawn from every specialism within the engineering and technology professions and cover sectors ranging from energy and defence to new materials. They have made exceptional contributions to their field: pioneering new innovations within academia and business, providing expert advice to government, and fostering a wider comprehension of engineering and technology.

In addition to his role as head of process engineering at Costain, Ollie is co-founder of the Association of Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers. He graduated with a BEng in chemical process engineering with fuel technology from the University of Sheffield in 1999 and then earned a PhD in the environmental impact of fuels combustion from the University of Leeds in 2002, authoring five international publications in the field of combustion and engineering.

The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a special ceremony in London on 18 November, when each Fellow will sign the roll book. In joining the Fellowship, they will lend their unique capabilities to achieving the Academy's overarching strategic goal to engineer better lives.

"It's a privilege to be recognised among a group of world class engineers and innovators that have made such a difference to society. At Costain, we have a clear purpose to improve people's lives, and our engineering-led approach means we can consistently deliver predictable, best-in-class sustainable infrastructure that helps people and the planet to thrive."

Sir John Lazar CBE FREng, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, said: "As we approach our 50th anniversary next year it's a good time to reflect on how much we have achieved. The Academy is built on the foundation of our Fellowship, and that remains as true today as half a century ago. Our story began as a 'Fellowship of Engineering' of 130 Fellows including such pioneers as Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle, Lord Hinton of Bankside and Sir Ove Arup, driven by the support of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

"Today's cohort join a community of around 1,700 of some of the most talented engineers and innovators in the UK and around the globe. Their knowledge and experience make them uniquely well placed to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world, and our determination to advance and promote excellence in engineering remains undimmed."

Costain supports its people with professional qualifications across all levels and disciplines, with more than 450 chartered engineers across the organisation. Earlier this year, engineer and design manager Georgia Thompson became the youngest woman ever to achieve Fellowship by the Institution of Civil Engineers.
