Danske Bank CEO Carsten Egeriis says the bank is once again in a position to consider acquisitions after nearly a decade without major deals, according to an interview with Bloomberg News.
Egeriis specifically highlighted Sweden as an attractive market, noting that the bank's relatively small retail banking operations there could be strengthened through an acquisition should the right opportunity arise. Conversely, the bank is not interested in acquiring businesses within Denmark.
The statement comes as Danske Bank, under Egeriis's leadership, has recovered from the money laundering scandal in Estonia and reported record profits. The bank has also resumed share buybacks, raised its profitability targets, and increased investments in technology and AI.
The Nordic banking sector has simultaneously been characterized by increased consolidation in recent years, with several major deals taking place in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
Danske Bank A/S is Denmark's leading bank. The activity is organized around four areas:
- retail banking;
- market and investment banking: financial brokerage, merger-acquisition consulting, portfolio management, etc.;
- insurance (Danica Pension): mainly life insurance and pension fund management;
- other: primarily management of investment funds and asset management.
At the end of 2025, the group managed DKK 1,244.6 billion in current deposits and DKK 1,060.9 billion in current loans.
