(Alliance News) - Industrie De Nora Spa announced on Monday that, through its subsidiary De Nora Permelec, it has signed a binding memorandum of understanding with US-based Tuleva for the supply of a high-capacity electrolysis system for a new battery-grade lithium refining plant in the United States.
The agreement marks a strategic step towards the development of one of the largest US plants based on advanced electrochemical technology for the production of lithium compounds, a key material for rechargeable batteries, electric mobility, and energy storage systems. The project also aims to strengthen the US domestic supply chain for critical raw materials.
Under the agreement, De Nora will provide a complete facility consisting of two ion-exchange membrane bipolar electrolysis systems, designed to ensure energy efficiency, reliability, and a reduced environmental footprint. The planned production capacity is approximately 11,000 tonnes per year of battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate.
The technology, based on a closed-loop process, will allow for reduced CO2 emissions, water consumption, and the use of toxic chemicals compared to traditional methods.
The deal initiates preliminary engineering activities, while the signing of the final contract is expected after Tuleva secures financing. The estimated value of the supply exceeds EUR10 million, with delivery expected within 15 months of signing the final agreement.
