Consumer discretionary firms ended Friday lower.

Discount retailers recorded some of the day's biggest losses. Dollar Tree and Dollar General both marked big declines, after Dollar General's latest quarterly earnings got a cool reception from the market.

Food producers Tyson and Hormel also finished Friday with losses. Global concerns about fertilizer supply are weighing on the outlook for agricultural companies.

Consumer staples performed better.
