BERLIN (dpa-AFX) - The head of the "Council of Economic Experts," Monika Schnitzer, has highlighted the strong work ethic of young people. "Gen Z works more than the generations before them," Schnitzer told newspapers of the Funke Media Group.
Generation Z refers to people who, according to most definitions, were born between 1995 and 2010. These young people are entering the labor market more quickly and are also working more hours than in the past, according to Schnitzer's assessment. Many of them, she noted, could not afford their studies without working.
Young people also often do not aspire to work in the public sector. "In Munich, many would rather go to BMW," said Schnitzer, who is an economics professor at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. "I think it's misguided to criticize the younger generation now." Incidentally, it is often the older people who feel they have worked enough and therefore choose to retire at 63 or 64.
"Economic Wise Woman" is the colloquial term for the Council of Economic Experts for the Assessment of Overall Economic Development in Germany. This team of experts is tasked with advising the federal government on economic policy matters. Monika Schnitzer has been chair of the council since 2022./gut/DP/zb
