The primary goal is to optimise the use of the electricity grid through intelligent management tools. These tools are designed to accommodate demand peaks, prevent congestion, and improve overall system efficiency, facilitating more coordinated management among the various energy stakeholders. The project incorporates advanced solutions to improve the planning, operation, and evaluation of EV charging.

The results obtained from this pioneering project will enable the development of new policies and the establishment of best practices to drive a model of electric mobility that is more efficient, sustainable, and fully integrated into the power system.

The Menorca initiative is one of five FLOW pilots, alongside those being developed in the Czech Republic, Ireland, Italy, and Denmark. The four-year project, led by the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), is funded by the Horizon Europe framework programme, with a total budget of approximately €10 million. It involves major European companies from the electricity sector, such as Endesa and its parent company Enel, as well as the mobility sector (vehicle manufacturers, developers, and charging infrastructure operators), universities, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and industry associations.

Key aspects of the FLOW project

  • Providing flexibility to the electricity system: Vehicles act as distributed storage and help address technical network needs.
  • Fostering renewable integration: Vehicles store energy from renewable sources when available and return it during periods of scarcity.
  • Reducing energy costs: Enables charging during low-cost hours or periods of renewable surplus, and discharging during high-cost hours.
  • Supporting system stability: Assisting with voltage and frequency control and the resolution of congestion in distribution networks.

This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe programme under Grant Agreement No. 101056730. https://theflowproject.eu/.
