(Alliance News) - The Strait of Sicily, situated between the major Argo and Cassiopea fields within the G.C1.Ag concession held by Eni (60%) and Energean (40%), has seen the addition of a new gas field, Milano Finanza reported on Friday.

Named Gemini, the field is estimated to provide 1.2 billion cubic metres over eight years, or 150 million cubic metres annually, representing 5% of national stocks. By way of a decree dated May 28 and published in the Hydrocarbons Bulletin, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) authorised the commissioning of the Gemini 1 well, located between the Argo and Cassiopea fields.

The case is notable for its procedural path, which sees Eni proceeding alone with a 100% stake, despite the field falling within a concession shared with Energean. The latter declined to join the project on November 11, citing technical and commercial concerns.

The impasse was resolved in less than a year thanks to Eni's IAM simulation model, which demonstrated that gas injection from Gemini improves the operational performance of the entire subsea system by reducing water presence. Having reviewed the technical assurances, MASE gave the green light in the interest of public utility and security of supply, overriding the partner's doubts.
