Ferrovial clinched a $1.08 billion contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to expand and upgrade the Rio Piedras channel, which it said aims to reduce flood risk in San Juan.

The infrastructure group said Monday that it had struck its second contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers within the broader Puerto Nuevo flood control program.

The entire program is expected to span around six years and create more than 10,000 jobs, Ferrovial said.

Ferrovial said the project will widen the waterway in the Puerto Rican capital, expanding it from 80 feet to more than 160 feet.

The improvements will reduce the risk of erosion and landslides---which is particularly important due to its proximity to densely populated areas of San Juan, Ferrovial said.
