Ford Motor said it is in talks with several governments in North America and Europe to supply vehicles and technology to support their defense needs.
The automaker said Monday its commercial offerings would allow governments to access technology at a fraction of the time and cost required by traditional, purpose-built military hardware, which it said takes years to develop and costs billions.
Ford remains in the early stages of defense work and hasn't finalized any specific defense projects. The talks began last year and remain productive, the company said.
Ford has a number of vehicles that could be suitable for the defense industry. The company's F-Series and Ranger platforms and their respective Super Duty lines are already built for severe terrain. Some of Ford's technologies, such as the ability to turn a truck into a mobile power source, and its reliability and service parts availability give it an advantage over traditional military?vehicles, the company said.
Ford is approaching the defense work looking to find less cyclical and more technology-driven ways to grow, it said.
