Health-care companies rose, but not by as much as the broad market, as traders rotated into cyclical sectors.

Bayer posted a steeper net loss for the fourth quarter, as it booked litigation charges as part of its yearslong court battles over its Roundup weedkiller. Bayer said growth of its Kerendia drug for kidney disease would partially offset the loss of patent protection of blood thinner Xarelto and eye medicine Eylea.

Vaccine maker Moderna agreed to pay $950 million to settle patent litigation by Arbutus Biopharma and Genevant Sciences GmbH.
