BAD HONNEF (dpa-AFX) - Amid years of construction industry turmoil, wood-based prefabricated housing saw significant growth last year. The market share of prefabricated homes among newly approved single- and two-family houses rose to an all-time high of 26.5 percent in 2025, according to the German Prefabricated Building Association (BDF), citing official figures.

In 2024, the share stood at 26.1 percent. The sector first surpassed the 20 percent threshold in 2019. Compared to traditional builds, prefabricated homes are generally more cost-effective and offer shorter construction timelines.

According to the data, 13,473 new prefabricated homes were approved in 2025, up from 11,543 in 2024. "Prefabricated construction is emerging faster from the building crisis," said Association President Mathias Schäfer. Schäfer added that prefabricated construction continues to gain importance regarding cost- and resource-optimized building.

In recent years, providers of wood-based prefabricated housing have faced the same challenges as the broader construction industry: rising interest rates and higher costs for materials and energy./cab/DP/mis
