STORY: Iran's military announced on Monday that a wave of attacks on Israel - the first since a ceasefire in April - was now over.

But it threatened to resume the strikes if Israel continued attacks on Lebanon.

That comes after U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday demanded Israel and Iran "immediately stop 'shooting'" after the rival nations traded attacks.

The renewed attacks drove oil prices up around 4 percent and threatened to wreck U.S.-led efforts to broker a deal to end the war.

Footage on social media showed smoke rising after Israel hit a petrochemical complex at Mahshahr in southwestern Iran, which Israel said was used to produce ballistic missiles.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said it had retaliated with a strike against an Israeli facility in Haifa.

Israelis hurried to shelters as air raid sirens blared and interceptors streaked through the sky.

Debris from Iranian rockets fell near the city of Jericho in the occupied West Bank, and damaged a home in an Israeli settlement.

Trump's demand to halt the fighting came after he told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from further attacks.

Trump said he wanted to avoid undermining the peace talks with Tehran to end the more than three-month-old conflict that began when the U.S. and Israel jointly attacked Iran at the end of February.

Despite a ceasefire reached in April, Israeli forces continued to battle Iranian-backed  Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon, and Hezbollah continued to fire rockets into Israel.

Iran had insisted the ceasefire included Lebanon.

Trump has leaned on Israel to stop its attacks in Lebanon to allow room for a deal to end the wider war with Iran.

After Israel attacked Hezbollah targets in a Beirut suburb, Tehran fired ballistic missiles at Israel.

An Israeli military official said Iran had fired "close to 30 ballistic missiles" at Israel since Sunday evening.

By Monday Israel's channel 12 news quoted a senior official that Israel had halted its attacks on Iran at Trump's request.

A spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry on Monday said America has "direct responsibility" in any action that Israel took in attacking Iran.
