SoftBank Group Corp has announced plans to acquire the robotics
division of Swiss industrial automation giant ABB Ltd for $5.38bn
by 2026, in a move designed to strengthen its position in robotics
and artificial intelligence technologies, Kyodo News
reports.
The Japanese conglomerate has been expanding its focus on
AI-driven industries spanning semiconductors, robotics, data
centres and energy infrastructure in the past year. The acquisition
marks its latest step towards integrating advanced robotics with
artificial intelligence, an area central to its long-term
strategy.
Earlier in 2025, SoftBank consolidated its robotics operations,
including SoftBank Robotics Group Corp, best known for developing
the humanoid robot Pepper, into a single entity.
The company has also stepped up its financial commitment to the
AI sector. In April, SoftBank said it planned to invest up to $40bn
in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, on top of the $2.2bn already
injected into the firm. Together with its partners, SoftBank aims
to channel at least $500bn into AI infrastructure projects in the
United States over the next four years.
