Kansai airport runways fully reopen after United plane's emergency landing

TOKYO - Kansai International Airport in western Japan fully reopened its runways early Saturday after a United Airlines plane made an emergency landing due to a cargo hold fire alert.

United Flight 32, which was originally headed for Cebu in the Philippines from Narita near Tokyo, made the emergency landing at around 7:10 p.m. Saturday at the airport in Osaka Prefecture. All 142 passengers and crew evacuated by emergency slides.

Takaichi tops Kyodo poll as most fit to be next head of Japan ruling LDP

TOKYO - Former economic security minister Sanae Takaichi is seen as the most suitable candidate to lead Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, a Kyodo News poll showed Friday, ahead of a party leadership election next month.

According to a two-day telephone survey conducted from Thursday, Takaichi was chosen by 28.0 percent of the respondents, followed by farm minister Shinjiro Koizumi with 22.5 percent. The two are seen as the main contenders in the Oct. 4 leadership contest to elect a successor to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who announced his resignation on Sunday.

U.S. urges other G7 members to do more to end Russia's war in Ukraine

WASHINGTON - The United States on Friday urged other members of the Group of Seven to do more to pressure Russia to end its war against Ukraine, including sharply raising tariffs on China and India over their continued purchases of Russian oil.

The demand was made during an online meeting of the finance ministers of the group, including Britain, Germany and Japan, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Human rights situation in North Korea has "degraded" in 10 yrs: U.N. agency

GENEVA - The situation surrounding human rights in North Korea has not only "not improved" since a decade ago, but has "degraded" in many cases, with political prisoners detained in camps and the death penalty carried out for a range of offenses, the U.N. human rights agency said in a report Friday.

Noting that foreigners abducted by North Korea, including Japanese nationals, remain unaccounted for, the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights also urged the country to immediately provide information on such people.

U.S. urges Japan not to recognize Palestine as state: sources

TOKYO - The United States has urged Japan not to recognize Palestine as a state at the U.N. General Assembly later this month, diplomatic sources said Friday.

The planned recognition of the Palestinian state by countries such as France and Britain is intended to put pressure on Israel to end its siege of the Gaza Strip.

Japan PM Ishiba arranging visit to South Korea, possibly Sept. 30: source

TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is arranging a visit to South Korea, possibly on Sept. 30, to meet with his counterpart President Lee Jae Myung, according to a government source.

The envisaged trip by Ishiba, who announced Sunday his intention to resign, will be part of the regular reciprocal visits by the two East Asian nations' leaders.

Japan imperial family pays respects to A-bomb victims in Nagasaki

NAGASAKI - Japan's Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and their daughter Princess Aiko visited Nagasaki on Friday to pay respects to victims of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing, in their last trip to honor the war dead on the 80th anniversary year of the end of World War II.

The visit is the imperial couple's first to the atomic-bombed city since the emperor acceded to the throne in 2019, and the 23-year-old princess's first-ever.
