International stocks trading in New York closed lower Wednesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts closed 0.2% lower at 144.41. The European index declined 0.1% to 140.72. The Latin American fell 0.8% to 175.88, while the emerging-markets index shed 0.3% to 278.68. The Asian index retreated 0.2% to 166.67.

The ADRs of Petróleo Brasileiro SA and ArcelorMittal traded actively.

The preferred shares of Petróleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras, fell after the lower house of Brazil's Congress approved a bill that would make it easier to put political appointees in top positions.

Shares of ArcelorMittal fell after the company said Tuesday it won't be able to restart one of its idled blast furnaces before the end of the year. The steelmaker, which idled its number 3 blast furnace at its Dabrowa Gornicza plant in Poland in early October, doesn't see signs of a European market recovery in the coming months.
