International stocks trading in New York closed higher Thursday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 0.9% to 164.26. The European index was 1.2% higher at 145.50. The Asian index increased 0.5% to 221.06. The Latin American index edged up 0.1% to 188.01. And the emerging-markets index improved 0.5% to 366.87.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

Rio Tinto PLC expects to ship less iron ore than previously anticipated from its Australian mining operations this year because of delays to projects caused by labor shortages in the country's west. The world's second-largest miner by market value is also on track to produce less copper and bauxite than it projected this year in big part because of plant-related problems, the company said. ADRs closed up 3% to $71.09 and fell in after-hours trading.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. plans to build a new chip manufacturing plant in Japan, the company said Thursday, as chip makers world-wide rush to increase production capacity amid a historic shortage of semiconductors.

Construction is slated to begin next year and mass production in late 2024, company executives said. TSMC, which Thursday reported record third-quarter profit, expects its production capacity to remain tight through 2022. ADRs closed 2.4% higher at $112.56.
