International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Thursday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 1.3% to 157.68. The European index fell 1.3% to 141.53. The Asian index fell 1.4% to 208.76. The Latin American index declined 1.7% to 178.13. And the emerging-markets index fell 1.4% to 342.87.

Renren Inc. was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

António Horta-Osório exhorted Credit Suisse Group AG employees to be better at managing risks and following the rules when he joined the Swiss bank in April after a string of scandals. The chairman got caught up in his own misconduct earlier this month, breaking quarantine in Switzerland with a plane ride out of the country. Mr. Horta-Osório said the breach was unintentional and has reported it to health authorities and to Switzerland's financial regulator. He apologized and said it wouldn't happen again. ADRs closed 1.9% lower at $9.60.

Renren Inc. said the Commercial Division of the New York State Supreme Court declined to approve an October stipulation of settlement regarding shareholder derivative litigation. ADRs dropped 53% to $12.15.
