International stocks trading in New York closed mostly lower on Wednesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts eased 0.5% to 158.48. The Asian index fell 1.3% to 201.75. And the emerging-markets index fell 1.1% to 335.72.

Meanwhile, the European index edged up 0.01% to 145.07. And the Latin American index improved 0.5% to 192.43.

Harmony Gold Mining Co. was among those whose ADRs traded actively.


Harmony Gold Mining Co. cut its full-year production guidance after geotechnical issues hurt production from the Hidden Valley mine in Papua New Guinea. ADRs fell 11% to $3.71.


Banco Santander SA is launching a "buy now, pay later" service, making it one of the first traditional banks to enter this growing market as it looks to boost its consumer-credit business. The Spanish lender will begin offering the service, Zinia, to customers in the Netherlands this year, with other markets to follow, it said Wednesday. ADRs closed 2.3% higher at $3.52.
