International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Wednesday. The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 1.6% to 155.87. The European index was up 2.3% at 143.18. The Asian index rose 0.5% to 193.34. The Latin American index increased 2.1% to 208.98. And the emerging-markets index rose 0.7% to 328.49.

Weir Group PLC's ADRs rose 13% on Wednesday after the U.K. engineering company reported a rise in pretax profit for 2021, which missed its own guidance, and said that it expects to post strong growth in revenue and profit for 2022.

ADRs of Swedish industrial toolmaker Atlas Copco AB rose 2.6% after the company said it has acquired SCB S.r.l., an Italian manufacturer that develops, produces and distributes equipment that removes water from air in compressed air and vacuum products.

Lukoil PJSC's ADRs slid nearly 16% despite the Russian oil-and-gas company reporting net profit and sales that jumped in 2021 after it booked a noncash asset impairment loss and foreign exchange loss in 2020. The earnings report comes as Russia and its companies face economic sanctions over that country's invasion of Ukraine.

ADRs of Sibanye-Stillwater Ltd. tumbled 2% Wednesday after the mining company reported that its platinum group metals and gold resources declined in 2021.
