International stocks trading in New York closed lower Tuesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts lost 0.8% to 137.43. The European index slipped 0.7% to 129.53. The Asian index declined 1.2% to 166.63. The Latin American index edged down 0.1% to 173.77, while the emerging-markets index retreated 1.1% to 279.02.

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The Chinese e-commerce giant edged up 0.4% following plans by the company to pursue a primary listing of its stock in Hong Kong, which it expects to complete by the end of this year.

Spanish bank Banco Santander SA slipped 1.6% after it said Santander Corporate and Investment Banking and SAP Spain reached a strategic partnership aimed at boosting digitalization across global transaction banking services.

In after-hours trading Tuesday, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. rose 18% after the company said it reached a nationwide agreement in principle to resolve the majority of its opioid-related litigation.
