International stocks trading in New York closed lower Wednesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts declined 2.7% to 140.82. The European index fell 2.6% to 134.08. The Asian index ticked down 2.8% to 164.31. The Latin American index retreated 2.8% to 199.88, while the emerging-markets index lost 3.2% to 281.90.

ArcelorMittal SA was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The steel maker fell 2.4% after it said that 60 million treasury shares have been canceled to keep the number of treasury shares it holds within appropriate levels. The company said the cancelation takes into account shares already purchased under its $1 billion share-buyback announced earlier this month.

Tarena International Inc., which operates as a holding company that provides information technology professional education services, rose 5.3% after it said it made a profit in the first quarter for the first time since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
