International stocks trading in New York closed lower Monday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts dropped 1.7% to 120.20. The European index retreated 1.9% to 111.51. The Asian index lost 1% to 146.45. The Latin American index declined 3.8% to 171.89, while the emerging-markets index tumbled 1.2% to 252.34.

BP PLC was among those whose ADRs traded actively. The London-based oil and gas company slipped 2.9% after it said it was shutting in production at its Na Kika and Thunder Horse platforms as well as evacuating all workers from Na Kika and all essential workers from Thunder Horse in preparation for Hurricane Ian.

British American Tobacco PLC edged down 1.4% after the company said it invested an undisclosed sum for a non-controlling minority stake in German cannabis company Sanity Group GmbH.
