The Japanese carmaker made the announcement as it looks to stay in line with tighter emission rules in the region.

The world's largest automaker said that by 2030 at least half of Toyota's model mix will be zero emission.

That would include electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell cars.

Toyota is accelerating into a space where many other carmakers have ventured.

Major rivals including Volkswagen and Nissan have also announced plans to release a range of electric cars.

But Toyota has differed from some other auto companies.

It has not committed to completely abandoning gasoline cars.

The company argues that some regions are not yet ready for a switch to EVs.

The update comes in the same week sources told Reuters that Toyota will launch an all-electric small sedan in China late next year.

The carmaker had reportedly turned to local partner BYD - or Build Your Dreams - for key technology to make the car affordable and roomy.
