BOE's Dhingra Warns on Risks of Overtightening

1112 GMT - Excessive monetary policy tightening would risk denting economic output at a time when growth is weak and household budgets are already squeezed, Bank of England external member Swati Dhingra says. In a speech at the Resolution Foundation in London on Wednesday, Dhingra says recent research indicates the harmful economic consequences of overtightening and such an approach increases the "downside risks" of missing the inflation target in the medium-term. "A prudent strategy would hold policy steady amidst growing signs external price pressures are easing, and be prepared to respond to developments in price evolution," she says. "This would avoid overtightening and return the economy sustainably to our 2% inflation target in the medium-term." (renae.dyer@wsj.com)

Market Talk:

Darktrace Statements Will Lack Credibility Until Audit Complete, AJ Bell Says

1144 GMT - Darktrace is going to be lacking in credibility until the audit of its finances, aimed at addressing concerns flagged by a New York short seller, is complete, AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould says in a note. "The problem for the company is that its AI-driven model is difficult to understand and doubts have been raised over its accounting. Until the business is less opaque the market may well treat its promise of jam tomorrow with skepticism," Mould says. However, at its first-half results, the cybersecurity company back its full-year targets and highlighted hacktivism and AI as drivers of future sales and there is logic to this argument, he says.(kyle.morris@dowjones.com)

Quilter's In-Line Guidance May Limit Outer-Year Consensus Upgrades

1119 GMT - Quilter sees group net flows at a bit more than 2% in 2023, with an improvement to 4% to 5% as the market recovers, which represents a downgrade to prior guidance, Citi says in a note. "However, updated guidance to be in line with consensus expectations on net flows and FY 2025 operating profit margins, which may temper outperformance and outer-year consensus earnings upgrades," analyst Andrew Lowe says. The U.K. asset manager also posted 2022 results ahead of views as better-than-expected costs resulted in a meaningful beat to profits, which Citi notes is leading to a positive share reaction. The stock is up 1.9% at 90.8 pence. (elena.vardon@wsj.com)
