SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is awake and doing well as he recovers from two operations this week to relieve and prevent bleeding in his skull, the presidential office said on Friday.

Lula, 79, is eating and speaking normally, the government said, noting that he is expected to leave intensive care on Friday.

An updated medical note on the leftist leader's condition was set to be released by Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes Hospital later in the day.

A medical note on Thursday evening said Lula, who is expected to be discharged early next week, had a drain removed from his head without complications and was "lucid and speaking normally".

Doctors operated on the president for about two hours on Tuesday to drain bleeding between his brain and meningeal membrane, which they said was linked to a fall at his home in late October.

Lula underwent a second procedure on Thursday morning, a middle meningeal artery embolization, aimed at minimizing the risk of future bleeding.
