OTTAWA--Canada's merchandise-trade deficit with the rest of the world narrowed in December as both exports and imports declined.

The country posted a goods-trade deficit of 160 million Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$119 million, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The consensus forecast was for a deficit of C$500 million, according to economists at TD Securities. November's trade deficit was revised to C$219 million.

Exports fell 1.2%, to C$62.97 billion in December, while imports declined 1.3%, to C$63.13 billion, the data agency said.
