It joins a long list of Chinese tech firms cutting jobs as the country battles the global health crisis.

A company spokesperson said on Tuesday (December 20) that its so-called "organizational streamlining" would "affect less than 10% of is total workforce."

It further said those affected had been compensated in compliance with local regulations.

The move could affect thousands of workers.

Many had just joined the company during a hiring spree that began in December last year.

The South China Morning Post reported in September Xiaomi had just over 35,300 staff.

In November, Xiaomi also reported a 9.7% fall in third-quarter revenue.

It blamed health crisis restrictions and softer consumer demand.

China's social media platforms like Weibo have seen a sharp rise in posts about the job cuts this week.

Many big Chinese tech companies including Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group have laid off workers in recent months.

That as China faces a prolonged battle with the health crisis.
